Search Engine Optimization and Internet MarketingYou’ve heard all those terms thrown around, but you’re not exactly sure what they mean.
We’ve provided some definitions for you – so that you can get a basic understanding of what each term means – and why they are important.
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization – it is the process used to get your website listed in the non-paid results of the search engines. When your customers go searching in Google, for example, they will be shown pages of results for their search. The process of getting your website listed at the top of these results is SEO.
SEO involves two main parts: on-page optimizations and off-page optimizations. The techniques used in SEO can get fairly complex but essentially separate into these two groups of activities. On-page optimizations are usually completed in the first month of service and involve all the work that is done on your website to make the search engines look at your site in the right way. Examples include proper sitemaps, metatags, written content, etc. Off-page optimizations involve getting the search engines to look to your site for certain keywords that might be pertinent to your organization (e.g. "accountant boston"). One common way to promote your site, for example, is by providing specially-written articles to other sites that than list your website when the right search is done. The work can be endless as more hand-done submissions to other sites are made. At a certain point, getting your website to the top of the rankings involves lots of hours of submitting such materials to many, many other sites.
Some claim that Google's search algorithm (search process criteria system) contains over 200 metrics. Good SEO deals with this complex process by getting your website listed when your customers go searching for your products and services.
Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising is displayed when pertinent words or phrases are entered in the search engines. These advertisements are usually shown as side text ads or top text ads in search engine query results displays. The customer pays the search engine every time someone clicks on their ad. Various companies compete in a complex bidding system for the opportunity. A small business usually pays an Internet marketing company to help set-up the campaign although some individuals attempt to do this themselves.
PPC is generally not as cost-effective as SEO but has the distinct advantage of being faster. In certain conditions, it can be effective. Study after study, however, shows that generally customers will go to the organic listings associated with SEO far more frequently. Some more complex campaigns involve both PPC and SEO.
SEM stands for Search Engine Marketing and usually refers to PPC advertising or the combination of PPC and SEO.
Internet marketing simply means marketing your business on the Web. SEO is usually considered to be the most effective form of Internet marketing, sometimes in combination with PPC. A good Internet marketer will develop a plan for your Internet marketing that looks at your business goals, budget, and current capacity.
